Iran should have nuclear weapons? 6

Aug29

A depressing comment from my pal Hossein Derakhshan on the Washington Post’s blog. Why would you say anyone should have nuclear weapons unless you were prepared to use them?

I simply can’t understand how Hossein would argue to put the deadliest weapons in the hands of a government who he can’t even trust not to arrest him for being a blogger. It’s a shortsighted, pessimistic and simplistic point of view.

…even if Iran becomes the most peaceful, secular and progressive, yet still independent state on the planet, the U.S. would be unable to tolerate it.

OK, but when is that likely to happen? The Bush Administration gets the boot in 2008. We (and I mean everyone on the planet) can’t let dislike of US policies cloud our good judgement.

With your argument, why the US doesn’t bother about Pakistan that in fact has helped Al-Qaida emerge as the deadliest terrorist group on the planet now by creating Taliban in Afghanistan?

Or why Israel that has attacked neighbours, captured lands, and killed civilans can get away with having nukes?

Iran has never attacked another country in the last century and its rhetorical threats to Israel have never been substantiated. Why then Iran shouldn’t have nukes to detter the US which has constantly done its best to topple the Iran’s government?

The contradiction in your argument is that you allow the US that ironically is the only state ever dropped nuclear bombs on populated cities to stop Iran from having nukes to protect itself, while it has let the much less democratic and radical and threatening Pakistan to have them.

And the bottom line is which state is more dangerous to have nukes: a satte that jails bloggers or one that has created Guantamo?

I don’t think anyone should have nuclear weapons.

Yes, but when you can’t get rid of what other states have now, why do you impose your idealistic standard only on Iran?

  4. solanasaurus says:

I do not – and it would not be the first time “what states have now” would be reversed. Check out this article? http://hnn.us/articles/1636.html
